Podium training

Podium TrainingThe difficulties associated with speaking from behind a podium are huge, yet many speakers feel more secure and stronger hiding behind a large piece of furniture when addressing an audience. But although the podium may make a speaker feel happier - something to lean on, somewhere to hide notes (and the body) - to communicate effectively and create a powerful and memorable impact, the energy, expression and vocal variety needed to compensate for the lack of the dynamism associated with movement and visual physicality is immense.

A speaker needs to be trained to enter with authority, to harness his energy and dominate the space so that his presence permeates it and the podium "disappears". A speaker's physicality, comfort and energy as well as vocal presence enables him to overcome the visual barrier and engage with the audience so that he does not feel he is distant and alienated from them.

Detailed timing and rehearsal, occasional movement to the side and/or away from the podium, posture, staging gesture, height and visibility are all critical elements that can either enhance or reduce the image and success of any conference delivery.

Learning microphone technique is also important. A microphone can only amplify what it is given and does not add authority. Magnified mutter is not appealing.

When it comes to using the podium  "learning on the job" is not an option. Skilful, practised management of the podium is essential for everyone who wishes to be a successful podium speaker and avoid "disappearing" behind the equipment.
