Podium training
A speaker needs to be trained to enter with authority, to harness his energy and dominate the space so that his presence permeates it and the podium "disappears". A speaker's physicality, comfort and energy as well as vocal presence enables him to overcome the visual barrier and engage with the audience so that he does not feel he is distant and alienated from them. Learning microphone technique is also important. A microphone can only amplify what it is given and does not add authority. Magnified mutter is not appealing. When it comes to using the podium "learning on the job" is not an option. Skilful, practised management of the podium is essential for everyone who wishes to be a successful podium speaker and avoid "disappearing" behind the equipment. | |||||
